Orissa
NEwS UPDATE
FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CUTTACK-BHUBANESWAR, INDIA

Violent Attacks Perpetrated Against
Christians in India

Orissa, India   August 25, 2008  --  After a local swami’s murder in the Eastern Indian state of Orissa, protesters have badly damaged several churches and severely injured several church-workers.

On the night of August 23, 2008, a Hindu seer named Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his associates were brutally gunned down.  The religious leader had been publicly threatened recently by the Naxalites, an extremist faction of the Communist Party of India regarded as terrorists by the national government.
